Using a points system awarding a player three points for a number one spot in any five-year period, two points for second place, and one point for third place:
39 George Brett
24 Kevin Appier
19 Amos Otis
17 Bret Saberhagen
17 Carlos Beltran
13 Mike Sweeney
12 David DeJesus
9 Willie Wilson
8 John Mayberry
8 Mark Gubicza
8 Johnny Damon
8 Zack Greinke
With the important caveat that that list only reflects how much a player dominated his own Royals era and teammates.
Five year periods at the top spot:
12 George Brett
7 Kevin Appier
4 Bret Saberhagen
4 Carlos Beltran
3 Amos Otis
3 David DeJesus
2 Johnny Damon
1 Mike Sweeney
1 John Mayberry
1 Zack Greinke
Most periods in the top three:
15 George Brett
9 Kevin Appier
8 Amos Otis
7 Bret Saberhagen
7 Carlos Beltran
6 Mike Sweeney
5 David DeJesus
5 John Mayberry
5 Willie Wilson
5 Jeff Montgomery
Using the 3-2-1 scoring system applied by position:
97 P
56 CF
40 3B
21 1B
9 LF
3 DH
2 2B
1 C
0 SS
0 RF
Looking ahead:
2007-11 (through 8/14/11)
18.2 Zack Greinke P
13.3 David DeJesus CF/LF
13.2 Joakim Soria P

Takeaways:

Mike Macfarlane had a surprisingly strong presence on the position player lists, but completely disappears when you add pitchers.

ZERO shortstops or right-fielders have been a top three WAR player in any five year period. Wow.
